Stoke on Trent District Heating – Priority Works 32 Updates

Morrison Utility Connections – District Heating have been engaged by Stoke on Trent City Council to design and build of this priority section of District Heating Network. The works are to be designed to provide an example of ‘Best Practice’ in the District Heating sector which have been designed to minimize the effects on the highway whilst provide an efficient and reliable source of renewable energy.

Morrison Utility Connections are acting as Principal Contractor with full responsibility for the safe and efficient delivery of the scheme.

Location

The route of our works is along a 750m length of Leek Road with the junction of Glebe Street and Boughey Road.

Nature of Project

We understand that the nature of this project and these works may well have an effect on local residents and businesses along the planned route and we plan to minimise any disruption wherever possible.

Where temporary traffic management is required we will apply the appropriate measures to match the site situation and inform the local community by the most pertinent method.

Whilst we are working in your local area, if you have any questions our on-site project supervisor will be happy to help, so please feel free to ask. Please remember when approaching the site team, that the signage and barriers are there for your safety – please don’t move barriers or signage or enter the work area under any circumstances.

Our project supervisor will be contacting local residents and stakeholders directly as our work progresses along their Road/Street/Avenue to inform residents of our intended works and to understand residents’ individual access requirements.

Leek Road - All works completed.

Glebe Street - All works completed.

Ashford Street - Works recommenced after design approval by Stoke City Council and we are excavating the trench for pipework installation next week.

Glebe Street/Station Road/Leek Road junction
The works here are well advanced and on time. We have now completed the remaining joints and connected the full system through. Over the coming week, the works will concentrate on backfilling and reinstating to a completion date before September. The road crossing to serve the 6th Form College has been undertaken over a period of nightshifts and we expect to complete these over the course of the next two weeks.

Ashford Street
Having recently encountered further complications, we are now finalising a design which should see the works recommence next week.

Additional Work:
We will be starting additional works outside the post office to install a new access chamber. The works are not expected to require restrictions to traffic flows.

Works have recommenced on the junction with Glebe Street, Station Road and Leek Road to complete a small section of pipework required to close the first section. Works are on schedule and are expected to be complete with 3-4 weeks.

Ashford Street – works have progressed along with the initial 75m from Boughey Road now complete and re-opened to public use. We would thank everyone for their patience whilst this difficult section was constructed.
Works are continuing further along with the next section of road expected to be completed by the end of next week.

Ashford Street – Works currently suspended pending updated design due to unforeseen underground obstructions.

Squires View – All pipework completed and only reinstatement works left to complete.

Station Road South – Works commencing Monday 30th July for five weeks.

Now reinstated up to and just past Watford Street.

Our compound has now moved from its home of the last 10 months off Lichfield Street which will stop the construction traffic seen during the works stop.

Works to Ashford Street that have been waiting on difficult design approvals have now been determined and the works will start again on Monday 25th June.

Works along Boughey Road are now complete.

Works to the junction of Glebe Street, Station Road and Leek Road have been reinstated whilst a final design is sorted for the south side of the junction. We are hopeful that this can be concluded within the near future and the works finished off thereafter.

We have reduced our manpower on the project to one team whilst we await the client’s instructions on outstanding sections.

Ashford Street - Works suspended pending a decision off the client on how to proceed.
Boughey Road – Carriageway permanently reinstated. Just some block paviours to complete in the footway, we expect to be complete by Tuesday 15th.
Station Road / Glebe Street / Leek Road – We are working night shifts only, so we can accommodate the University’s requirements to reduce noise levels during this month’s exams.
We are excavating the trench at the moment.
Station Road crossing is now 80% permanently reinstated.

Currently we are running with a reduced workforce whilst the re-design work required to accommodate the unforeseen underground obstructions is completed and some of these works will be on night shifts.

Ashford Street – Works suspended pending clearance to proceed by the client.
Boughey Road – Pipework complete and the road will be reinstated today.
Station Road - (Glebe Street, Leek Road junction) – South side - waiting for final design.
Road crossing is complete except for final reinstatement which will be completed next week.
North side- the trench is being altered / re-excavated to accommodate a new design due to unforeseen underground obstructions.
At present all installation works are programmed to be complete by mid-July (except for the commissioning phase).

We have now encountered obstacles in the carriageway that will a redesign of our works to accommodate them, so in the meantime we are completing all available existing works as follows;

Boughey Road – Completing the last welds today and we plan to complete all reinstatement by next Friday.
Leek Road – Works suspended pending design changes.
Ashford Street – Works suspended pending design changes.

Ashford Street
On programme and will have approximately 110m installed and reinstated by next week.
This section is highly congested with underground utilities and our trench is on average 3m deep.

Boughey Road
Last 15m left to complete, again a very congested area with the ground saturated with ground water which makes temporary trench support and pipe installation very difficult.

Station Road Crossing
We are crossing a major four way junction during night shifts, starting at 9pm and finishing at 5am with the use of a road closure. Junction is approximately 24m wide and trench is 2.2m deep and is protected by specifically designed road plates plus 20m of footpath will be exposed at the same depth to install 2 x 500mm steel insulated pipes.

Glebe Street/ Station Road/Leek Road junction works

Works are progressing on nights shifts and were undertaken throughout the recent Bank Holiday period to reduce the impact on the road network. Despite encountering many services, we have progressed well and expect works to be completed within the next 2 weeks.

Next week the works will move onto the 6th Form pedestrian crossing, access will be maintained throughout.

The works will continue to connect the section in front of the Post Office through the junction.

Boughey Road:
Works are substantially complete with the final section currently being piped through. The section is now being backfilled and reinstated and traffic management is expected to be removed from the highway next week.

Ashford Street:
These works are continuing to progress with the works being redesigned to avoid the many services to adjacent properties.

Leek Road:

Working on two sections. The first is towards the Squires View area where we are well advanced with road crossing into the new development area. Works are in line to be completed next week where the traffic management can then be removed.

Outside the Post Office has seen the works move into the highway requiing complex traffic management and witnessing some delays around the junction. The works are being progressed with urgency and an understanding of the difficulties road users are facing. To mitigate delays we are working around the clock to progress and move from the area.

Boughey Road.

Works continue to work at both ends of the road. Works to the Leek Road end are progressing following complications with unknown services. The design of the scheme has been adjusted to maintain progress. The works on the Junction with Ashford Street are now entering the reinstatement phase so we would expect to be off the junction by the end of next week.

Ashford Street
The works are now progressing along. Further investigation of along the street will be undertaken in advance of the main works to minimise future complications and reduce the time we expect to be working along the street.

Works completed up to the Glebe street , Station Road Junction. The bus stops have now been reopened for public use.
Works outside the Post Office have now been completed and advanced further towards Boughey Road.
Traffic management have been changed to reflect these progressions.

Boughey Road:
Works progress along both ends of the street.
Complex undertakings around utilities are ongoing as the works turn into Ashford Street which are requiring redesigns.
Works to the south end of Boughey Road are progressing and will shortly move off the carriageway.

Boughey Road – Works continue on both ends of the highway, good progress made as the pipes now move onto the northbound carriageway. Areas being backfilled and reinstated.
Leek Road – Outside the 6th form college, these are now being backfilled, reinstated and completed
Leek Road – Post office – works are now reinstated in advance of the next phase commencing in 2 weeks time.

Works progressing to complete the surfacing and kerb works along Leek Road. Night works are to be undertaken next week in order to mitigate and minimise any disruption to the public.
Works in front the Post Office are looking to be reduced by the end of next as next phase of the works commences.

Boughey Road will see the final sections being undertaken in order to progress onto the next stage of the works.

Following the Christmas shutdown we have now remobilised to site:

Leek Road – the works to the approach to the Glebe Street/Station Road junction have been completed to a stage where the traffic lights have been returned to there normal working conditions.
The remaining works are no being undertaken off the carriageway and where we need to go back onto the highway, we will be doing so over the nights and returning all lanes back for the morning.

The works in front of the Post Office have been progressed over the Christmas period and we are expecting them to be completed by next Monday. Following this, the works will head further along Leek Road and then pass onto Boughey Road.

The works along Boughey Road were closed off during the Christmas shutdown to minimise the effects during the holiday period. We are now starting to complete the works and place the permanent surfacing back.

Boughey Road – Excavations works significantly complete with the majority of the pipe installed.
Works next week will concentrate on reinstating the length of the street and only small localised sections being retained for future connecting works.

Leek Road – Section in front of the Post Office have been excavated with pipe being installed over this weekend.
Next week we will concentrate on the installation of communication ducts and the reinstatement to allow the section to be opened up in advance of the Christmas shutdown on Saturday 23rd.
The section along Leek Road in front of the 6th Form College has had significant progress with all excavation works completed. Works are now concentrated on pipe installation and backfill prior to the Christmas shutdown.

• Leek Road: working in two locations

a. Opposite the 6th Form College – works progressed substantially over the past week. Reinstatement undertaken and the length of traffic management has now been reduced.
b. Traffic lights at the junction with Glebe Road/Station Road are to be adjusted to accommodate the next phase.
c. Works have started and progressing well outside of the Post Office sorting office. Works are being undertaken on nights to minimise the disruption to this key facility at this time of the year

• Boughey Road is advancing well with section now being resurfaced and opened back up. Works are progressing in order to complete the majority of the road in advance of Christmas holidays.

Leek Road – Good progress continues to be made with section now being reinstated and handed back to the public.
Leek Road – the works have progressed in front of the Post Office, we would apologise for any inconvenience this is posing to those needing access to this building
The unpopular use of a convoy system adopted on sections has now being removed as a more traditional traffic management arrangements with cones and continuous flow of traffic has been established
Boughey Road – These works are well advanced with section to be completed and returned to public use expected by the end of this weekend.
