Morrison Utility Connections have been engaged by energy storage system integrator RES to provide the utility connections for their new battery storage facility at the Port of Tyne.

The route of these works start at South Shields Substation on Hartford Road and will go through Colman Avenue, Roman Road, across Newcastle Road, along Hobson Way and across Jarrow Road into the Port of Tyne.

Nature of Project

Morrison Utility Connections have been engaged by energy storage system integrator RES, a leading expert in battery storage, to design and develop a 37MVA grid connection from South Shields to the Port of Tyne, one of the UK’s major deep sea ports and trading gateways. The project will include the installation and commissioning of a containerised substation, auxiliary transformer and the connection of the battery storage equipment.

We understand that the nature of this project and these works may well have an effect on local residents and businesses along the planned route and we plan to minimise any disruption wherever possible.

Where temporary traffic management is required we will apply the appropriate measures to match the site situation and inform the local community by the most pertinent method.

Please remember when approaching the site team, that the signage and barriers are there for your safety – please don’t move barriers or signage or enter the work area under any circumstances.

Our project supervisor will be contacting local residents directly as our work progresses along their Road/Street/Avenue to inform residents of our intended works and to understand residents’ individual access requirements.

HDD1 (Horizontal Directional Drill) under Newcastle Road -Final ream completed and the pipes are due to be pulled on Saturday 18th November 2017.
Substation site - Testing commenced and continuing.

Port of Tyne land ducting completed.
HDD2 under Jarrow Road reaming, ready to pull HDD pipe Saturday.
Enabling works for substation lift and landing underway.
Ducting in National Grid land completed.
Excavation in Hartford Road commenced.
Excavation and duct installation 35% complete on Colman Avenue.

Cable Duct Installation woks between Jarrow Road and Hobson Way is now complete
Horizontal Directional Drill under Jarrow Road is scheduled to commence on 07/11/17
Duct Installation Works on Hartford Road commenced this week.

Colman Avenue
Duct Installation Works will commence 07/11/17 with ducts being installed by 17/11/17
Replacement of the Pavement and Road will commence around the 10th November and continue through until December 15th.

Excavation and duct installation in Port of Tyne from new substation to Jarrow Road Horizontal Directional Drill 75% complete.
Continuing excavations in National Grid land/Northern Power Grid substation.

Friday 20th October 2017 13:00

Works planned to commence on Colman Avenue on 23rd October 2017 and to last for approximately three weeks to install ducting.
Resurfacing of Colman Avenue is planned to be completed by mid-December.
Cable route through private land has been completed.
Directional Drill under Jarrow Road commences on 23rd October 2017.
Directional Drill under Newcastle Road planned to commence on 30th October 2017.
