Welcome to our latest project page, which has been designed to keep all interested parties and stakeholders fully informed that we have been contracted by Durham County Council to provide new essential infrastructure connections.  The works include excavating, laying cables, traffic management and associated infrastructure works in the locality. Part of these works will be completed in the highway, and unfortunately this may cause some delays and disruption.

The project timetable may be subject to change depending upon weather conditions and we plan to keep you fully informed of any changes due to circumstances out of our control, so please do regularly check back here for the latest updates.

Project Details

  • Location:

    From Newton Park services (just off junction 59 of the A1 on the A167 Durham Road) to NPG Darlington North substation on Whessoe Road

  • Nature of the Project:

    Morrison Utility Connections have been contracted by Durham County Council to provide new essential infrastructure connections.  The works include excavating, laying cables, traffic management and associated infrastructure works in the locality. Part of these works will be completed in the highway, and unfortunately this may cause some delays and disruption.

  • Community:

    We understand that the nature of this project and these works may well have an effect on local residents and businesses along the planned route and we plan to minimise any disruption wherever possible.

    Where temporary traffic management is required we will apply the appropriate measures to match the site situation and inform the local community by the most pertinent method.

    We are committed to providing you with timely information and responding effectively to questions from local people so that any associated disruption can be minimised.

    A1M HDD (Horizontal Directional Drill) complete, demobilisation of the area currently underway.
    A167 HDD (Horizontal Directional Drill) currently is being setup.
    Brafferton Lane – Traffic Management - road closure ongoing – dig and lay team 2 (estimated to be finished by this weekend)
    Burtree Lane – Traffic Management - single lane closure ongoing – dig and lay team 1 (3 way lights still in place, to be reduced to two way next week)
    A167 Durham Road – Traffic Management - lane closure still in place, taper to be reduced by 20-02-17 and works complete by 24-02-17.

    A1M HDD (Horizontal Directional Drill) ongoing and estimated to complete next week, as we are on drill 6 of 7.
    Whessoe Road dig and lay works completed, highway reinstated, Traffic Management - 3 way lights removed.
    Dig and lay team 1 on Burtree Lane, Traffic Management - two way lights in place.
    Dig and lay team 2 on A167 Durham Road, approaching Burtree Lane, Traffic Management - Lane closure in place.
    Aycliffe Forrest Substation civil build ongoing, switch room base poured, transformer T1 blinded.
    Durham County Council highway and service diversions/new services install works on going. Traffic Management - They have a lane closure on the A167 south bound Newton Park services.
    Durham County Council main site works, installing surface water drainage.
    Traffic Management - The road closure for Brafferton Lane will be in place from 13-02-17 for 5 days.

    HDD (Horizontal Directional Drill) under A1M ongoing.
    Dig and lay ongoing on Whessoe Road/junction of Burtree Lane – We will look at completing Whessoe Road and continue down Burtree Lane next week. Traffic Management, 3 way lights to remain in place.
    Dig and lay ongoing on A167 Durham Road. There will be a lane closure to be put in place from next week.
    Substation civil construction works ongoing.

    Dig and lay commencing on Whessoe Road, 3 way lights in place on Whessoe Road and the junction of Burtree Lane. Whessoe Road is expected to be completed by 26-01-17.
    Dig and lay commencing on A167 Durham Road in the verge, Traffic Management will be put in place on the A167 to reduce the lanes leading up to Brafferton Lane.
    A road closure is to be put in place on Brafferton Lane for 5 days starting on 30-01-17; letter drops to be completed to inform the local residents of our works.
    Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) contractor mobilised on 16-01-17, A1M HDD commencing and they have already crossed underneath the A1M.
    Substation civil contractor mobilised, substation civil works commencing.

    Whessoe Road closure works complete on 12-01-17, Traffic Management to be removed 13-01-17.
    The A1M HDD (Horizontal Directional Drill) settlement monitoring has begun.
    Pipe for A1M HDD delivered and welded in readiness for the HDD mobilisation on 16-01-17.
    Welfare setup for substation civil construction phase in readiness for mobilisation on 16-01-17.

    Begin excavation and lay from the south side of the A1M HDD joint bay down the A167 in the verge initially.

    Traffic Management on Whessoe Road has been removed for the Christmas period.
    There will be no more excavations on Whessoe Road this year, but they will be continued in the New Year.
    Please be aware that Whessoe Road will have a road closure in place on 3rd January 2017 for 10 days.

    Traffic Management on Whessoe Road removed for Christmas.
    No more excavations on Whessoe Road this year, to be continued after the New Year.
    Please be aware that Whessoe Road will have a road closure in place on 3rd January 2017 for 10 days.

    Undertaking trial holes and slip trenches between Newton Park Services, A1 Junction 59 and Whessoe Road to establish service depths and positions.
    Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys (GPR) along the same route which has meant some traffic management has been needed.
    These initial works are scheduled to be complete by the end of October 2016.
